Abu Dhabi International Triathlon 2011

March 12, 2011 (Abu Dhabi, U.A.E.) What was initially billed as the Duel in the Dessert between Craig Alexander and reigning Kona Champ Chris McCormack, never evolved as Macca had to drop out with a mechanical problem. Even with this abandonment, seven of the top 10 Kona finishers remained in the hunt.

The duel became athletes vs. the dessert, heat and strong sand-laden winds pounding the riders for 200 km before even heading out for the mid-day run leg.

Super-biker Andrew Starykowicz lead into T2 by almost 6 minutes, but faded on the run, finishing 10th and collapsing at the finish.

On the women's side, Julie Dibens wearing her Union Jack Lazer helmet, showed her dominance on the bike even with the amazing field including, Caroline Steffen, Cat Morrison, Rachel Joyce and Angela Naeth.

Frederik Van Lierde took top honor for the men, with only 33 seconds between first and fourth. Julie repeated as the women's champ.
