Rohto Oceanside 70.3 2011
April 2, 2011 (Oceanside, Calif.) American Andy Potts and Australian Mirinda Carfrae celebrated victories at today's Rohto Ironman 70.3 California. Potts and Carfrae crossed the finish line in 3:55:49 and 4:26:18, respectively.
Potts exited the water first and maintained his lead throughout the bike with Michi Weiss taking it from him toward the end. Weiss led out of transition, but shortly into the run, Henning took the lead by a mere few seconds. Potts pulled away from Henning with less than half a mile to go and claimed his title.
American Dede Griesbauer led out of the swim with Kelly Williamson (USA) trailing by only four seconds. Magali Tisseyre took the lead by mile five of the bike and maintained it until the end when fellow Canadian Melanie McQuaid caught her. American Heather Jackson stayed close behind earning the fastest bike split of the day with a 2:29:57, at an average pace of 22.4 mph.
With just two miles left in the run, Carfrae was behind by 30 seconds, but Jackson was not ready to give up what would have been the biggest win of her career. The 26-year-old from San Diego put in one final surge to hold off the sport s best runner, but Carfrae's speed was too much to match. She pulled away with little more than half a mile to run, earning her third consecutive Oceanside title by a margin of only 10 seconds.
